@Terry B, I sort of was wondering why some group creators made subscriber the default role when joining their groups, I explain it in the text under the question, and I wanted to know if some of them might want to explain their position. Free members can be both, it depends on what the creator decides.

There is one thing free members can't do about groups, it's being able to create groups.

@Lido, copying comments is not allowed at APSense. Notice there's a "Report" link in each comment, this is for reporting abuse. I click on it now.

As for groups where subscriber is the default role, I almost always leave as soon as I join when I realize I am a subscriber.

Warren, a subscriber can add comments to discussions, so he's not just an observer, but he can't start discussions.

A subscriber is just a observer and a contributor has the option to take part in what happens there. If I join a group (very few) as a subscriber and not much happens, I leave.

It depends much on the purpose where the group is set up for. Some are for discussions originally but is difficult at present due to the limitation of numbers of characters. Others are set up for centralizing information or just for advertising.

The number of group members makes less sense than the active members of a group. So reviewing every new members is the necessary job for you to build a successful group.

That was the point, I wanted to get the attention of members to explain my point of view why it's not useful to have group members be subscribers.

Subscriber only can read discussions and write comments. Contributor may start a discussion in a group.
