1 Quinta Gameros

The Quinta Gameros on Paseo Bolivar is a great art Nouveau house ordered by entrepreneur Manuel Gameros for his wife. Work began in 1907 and was completed at the start of the Mexican Revolution, so this Porfirian couple could never live there. The house is decorated with Art Nouveau furniture from the Requena collection, as well as quirky and lavish details.

2 Centro Historico

The Centro Histórico is bound on the north by Av. Nios Heroes, on the east by Av. Pacheco, on the south by Av. It houses all of Chihuahua's oldest architecture. Chihuahua, like all Mexican cities, is out on a grid system, making it easy to navigate.

3 Chihuahua Cathedral

Chihuahua Cathedral, located on the south side of Plaza de Armas, is considered northern Mexico's finest Baroque monument. It was built in 1725. Some of the fittings on display were made in other countries, such as the octagonal window commissioned in Germany and the clock made in London. A beautiful carved wooden nave screen with a carved relief of St Peter and St Paul is inside the portal.

4 Government Palace

The Government Palace, next to the Museo Casa Chihuahua, housed the legislature of the State of Chihuahua until 2004, and it still houses the governor's executive offices. But there's something else intriguing about this location: it's where Miguel Hidalgo was executed by a Spanish firing squad in 1811. The Altar de la Patria (Altar of the Fatherland), built in 1956, stands where Hidalgo fell. This first piece was so well received that Pia Mora was commissioned to decorate the entire first floor.

5 San Francisco Temple

The San Francisco Temple on Calle Libertad is one of only a few monuments in Chihuahua that have survived since colonial times. It was started in 1717, just ten years after the city was founded, and finished in 1789. The Franciscan order founded the church, as the name implies, and its plain whitewashed walls reflect the Franciscans' no-frills style. If you're on the Miguel Hidalgo trail, there's a monument to the independence leader right in front of the church, and a stone inside marks the location where Among both 1811 and 1823, he was laid to rest before his body was moved to Mexico City.
