Humayun’s Tomb which is situated in New Delhi is a tomb to the house of mortal remains of the second Mughal Emperor Humayun. Humayun’s Tomb is located to the south of Purana Qila. It’s near the intersection of Mathura Road and Lodhi Road in New Delhi’s Nizamuddin East neighbourhood. The tomb which is built in the memory of Emperor Humayun is one of the significant evidence of Mughal architecture and is still one of the finest grand dynastic garden tombs in India. This tomb is India’s first Garden Tomb. The tomb just not holds the mortal remains of the Emperor but also has various other monuments, tombs, and structures that attract the tourists.

 

The Humayun’s Tomb stands on a high, wide terraced platform with two bay deep vaulted cells on all the four sides. The tomb stands on an irregular octagon plan with four long sides and chamfered edges. The construction of tomb introduced Persian artistry in India but also depicted the blending of Mughal and Hindu cultures as the monument has several Hindu motifs on it. The garden of the monument is divided into 36 squares by a grid of water channels and paths. The garden represents an emperor’s place in heaven and these gardens are symbolic and are known as “gardens of paradise”.

 

During the British Raj, Humayun’s Tomb was used for cultivation and during the time of partition, this tomb ground served as refugee camps for millions of people. The setting up of refugee camp damaged the monument and it’s garden as people lived there for five years. Lack of government resourced the monument suffered and was neglected for a long time until UNESCO named it a World Heritage. The entry to the tomb can be done from two entrances, the main entrance is from the south and the other is from the west. There are about 100 graves within the entire monument which includes many of them at the first level earning the name of “Dormitory of the Mughals”. Not many people are aware of this but Humayun’s Tomb was the inspiration behind the building of Taj Mahal. It stays open from Sunrise to Sunset.
