Story of Kota Doria
Saree’s Origin
One of the finest woven sarees, Kota Doria, has its origin
in Kota. This place is in the south of Rajasthan. It sits along the eastern
side of the Chambal River. In queues of largest districts, Kota’s rank is 26th
after Jaipur and Jodhpur. These sarees make their route from there to Jaipur
and other parts of the world.
‘Kota Masuria’ is it’s another famous name which is famous
worldwide. This name sounds confusing as it has ‘Masuria’ which may be sprung
from ‘Mysore’, a district in Karnataka. It’s possibility that the weavers might
have migrated from Kota to this district and continued their weaving of Kota
sarees there. Since the silk used with the cotton thread for its weaving was
sourced from this district so, they might be settled there centuries ago.
‘Masoor’ is also the name of a lentil (dal). ‘Kota Masuria’
name might be coined due to its texture that looks like the dal.
Kota Doria’s Texture
The checked pattern in which its fabric is woven is known as
‘Khat’. Originally, its chic texture is the fusion of cotton and silk threads.
But now, tussar (fabric) is also added to make it stylish and long-lasting.
Occasionally, zari and various fancy yarns are also woven at its edge for
making it look sassy.
