Who Can Issue Digital Signature Certificates in India

Before knowing about the Digital Signature issuing authority, you should know about the Digital Signature Certificate in detail. It is a tool that makes digital documentation and online transaction safe and secure. No one can steal the information shared through Digital Signature Certificate unless he/she knows the password of the USB Token on which it is stored. By using this amazing tool, you can file income tax e-return, PF claims and participate in the e-tendering, e-auction, e-bidding processes. The other usages of digital signature certificates include e-ticketing, trademark e-filing, MCA/ROC filing and form 16 filing.

You can also use DSCs for signing important documents related to your business. Now, let's talk about the different types of Digital Signature Certificates. There are three types of DSC, Class 2, Class 3 and DGFT, currently issued in India for the above-mentioned purposes. The first two types of DSC are issued to both the individual user and the company user. However, the third type is issued to only those export and import (EXIM) organizations that comprises of IEC Code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

An individual user can file IT e-return, application for the incorporation of new company under MCA/ROC using Class 2 Digital Signature Certificate. On the other hand, the authorized signatory of a business organization can participate in the e-tendering, e-bidding and e-auction processes on behalf of his/her organization. In addition, Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (individual user) is issued to IRCTC agents for e-ticketing, however, Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (company user) is issued to the authorized signatory of a business entity to participate in the e-tendering, e-bidding and e-auction processes on behalf of his/her organization.

This type of DSC is also used for trademark e-filing. Moreover, EXIM organization comprising of IEC code issued by DGFT are issued DGFT Digital Signature Certificate for making communication with the web portal of Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Now, it's time to know about the issuing authority of Digital Signature Certificate. In India, only Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) certified Certifying Authorities (CAs) are allowed to issue the digital signature certificate. There are six CAs currently issuing Digital Signature Certificates in India.
