People with temporary or permanent physical disabilities find travelling or moving from one place to other a hindrance. Their journeys or rides are made comfortable by the availability of wheelchair adaptive vehicles. These vehicles give the disabled person freedom of movement and also allow him or her to seat in the driver’s seat.

Parking assistance systems

People with disability while driving a disability aided vehicle find it the most difficult to park the vehicles in normal allotted car space. In order to make their parking hassle free the transport department and the municipality of the state allot them specific parking space. These parking spaces are demarcated through signs and signals and are easily located. The area provided for each vehicle is larger than normal vehicles. In cases of rear entry vehicles, the parking space needed should be more backward and forward. In side entry vehicle the width of the parking space should be more.

Hands free indicators and signals

Drivers with hands or finger disabilities have the toughest problem while operating buttons and switches for signaling and indicator operations. An innovative solution for this is installation of integrated control knobs or modules that have all the controls of lights, indicators and other related features within a minimum use of fingers. A single roller knob is sometimes modified to be used to control the steering wheel while buttons fitted on it can be connected with the clutch and gear system which can be operated with only the thumb. More advanced systems are in use which are voice recognition technologies and can be operated with a few simple voice commands.

Air suspensions and exhaust pipes

While modifying handicap vehicles, the factory trained technicians have to keep in mind the weight considerations. Modifications like sliding doors, pillar adjustments, lowering of floors for ramp accommodation and wheelchair installations increase the weight of the vehicle, thus the suspension needs to be upgraded and strengthened. Due to these modifications the fuel tank and the exhaust pipes needs to be pushed back from their original position in order to accommodate changes made. The engine changes are made for the smooth running of the vehicles.

Size considerations

People using wheelchair accessible vehicles can choose from a variety of vehicle size depending on their utility. A single wheelchair user can opt for mobility scooters for his or her individual use or a single wheelchair disabled person with small family can choose between a convertible and minivan for travelling and driving purposes. If a family has more than one person in wheelchair, they can opt for full size vans or mini trucks. A full size van can accommodate up to two wheelchairs at a time along with other normal seats. Many countries are coming up with the option of modifying transport buses and trucks and making them accessible for wheelchair bound people. Modified buses are also used by disabled societies and hospitals. This makes their conveyance comfortable and cheap. These buses and trucks can accommodate multiple numbers of wheelchairs
