What to Look for When Buying CBD Products for Pets
It’s hard for a pet owner to have not heard some of the
discussions around CBD products for pets. It is currently one of the biggest
health trends in the natural pet wellness industry. CBD dog treats
and oils are lining shelves at pet stores around the country. Reviews of CBD
products are all over the internet. But are these products safe? Is there truth
to the claims made by CBD pet product manufacturers?
There were several studies done to prove the
effectiveness of CBD in managing symptoms associated with a wide range of
illnesses like cancer, arthritis, and seizures. These products were also found
to help manage stress in senior pets, especially those suffering from cognitive
dysfunction. These studies have not reported any significant side effects, and
neither have many of the pet owners who have used CBD products in the past. But
vets prescribe caution, especially for pets on medication for other illnesses. The
quality of the product is also very important because many of these products
are so new they are still unregulated by the FDA. Here are some of the other
things to look for when considering getting CBD oil for dogs and other
animals.
1. Do
Not Skimp on Cost
The purity of the CBD is a major factor that
determines the effectiveness of the product. Many cheap CBD dog treats do not
contain the amount of CBD the label claims the product has. This was reported
in 2017
study in JAMA where only 24 of the 84 tested samples of products purchased
online contained the promised amount of CBD.
These products are likely to include fillers and
even contaminants such as pesticides and heavy metals. When buying CBD for
pets, make sure the product does not have additives that could be toxic to
pets.
2. Buy
Products that Come with a COA
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) issued by an
independent lab that confirms the veracity of the manufacturer’s claims. This
includes claims that the CBD product does not have THC levels of more than
0.3%. Products with levels higher are illegal in parts of the United States and
may not be safe for your pet. Look for
companies that support research and are willing to display lab tests on their
website.
3. Check
Where the Product is Manufactured
Suppliers who claim to manufacture their own CBD at GMP certified and FDA registered facilities are likely to be more reliable.
This label ensures little or no contamination, so the CBD derived is purer.
4. Do
Your Research
Like with all wellness medications, CBD products
come with their side effects. Because of this concern, it is important to
always read labels carefully and consult with your vet before administering any
new products. Some of the possible side effects could include drowsiness and
dry mouth. After getting a vet’s approval, start with small amounts and observe
very carefully for possible effects.
CBD products for pets are a growing market that
could have the potential to help many four-legged friends. Since the products
are so new and sometimes unregulated, it is important to understand each
product before purchases it and take the necessary precautions when using it.
