What skincare is best for dehydrated skin?
We all know that we need to drink a lot of water to keep our bodies hydrated, but can you recognize when your skin is dehydrated, and do you know what to do about it?
If your skin feels tight, looks dull, lacks volume, and has red, scaly patches, you may conclude that you have dry skin. Let me ask you a question: has your skin always been dry? If not, it is much more likely that your skin is dehydrated.
Dry skin is skin that has little sebaceous activity; nerds talk about it not producing as much oil as it should. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is low in water rather than oil; it is not a genetic predisposition but rather the result of lifestyle factors, such as a diet low in fatty acids and other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, alcohol consumption, misuse of skin care products, and adverse weather conditions.
What is skin dehydration?
Skin dehydration isn't all cut and dry, due to the number of factors that can influence how our skin dehydrates. However, from a formulation standpoint, when skincare formulators think of dehydrated skin, they are generally trying to increase moisture content and reduce water loss from the skin by adding moisturizing ingredients and ingredients that can help to restore the skin barrier to a happier state.
So realistically, if your skin has become dehydrated, it has fewer lipids like ceramides, for example, or even sebum. It's not so much that your skin isn't producing enough sebum, it's more than the sebum you do produce can be removed from the skin.
Coming from a skin therapist's perspective, as formulators, we want to instantly relieve dehydration with moisturizers and then try to reduce what is causing skin dehydration. It is actually one of the simplest skin problems to tackle and can be greatly improved in a week or two.
Causes of Dehydrated skin:
External factors and aggressors are among the common causes of dehydration. Things we face every day, like sun exposure, air conditioning, central heating, and extreme weather, can pull water from our skin, causing it to become dehydrated.
How to know if you have dehydrated skin:
Dehydrated skin is very common, so you may have suffered from some of the symptoms in the past, without knowing the cause. Dehydrated skin is often dull, tight, sensitive, rough in texture, and may show signs of aging more clearly. You might even notice that fine lines and wrinkles appear more prominent.
While it can be tempting to use thick, rich moisturizers in an attempt to quench dehydrated skin, it's important not to confuse moisture with hydration when dealing with skin that's deprived of water.
Products that claim to hydrate the skin can help retain moisture, while hydrating products often contain humectants. Humectants are ingredients that draw water from the air and draw it from the lower layers of the skin, meaning they are intensely moisturizing and hydrating.
