ANKENY, Iowa – You've heard of New York Fashion Week. Now, students at Des Moines Area Community College are working to put their program on the fashion world's map.

You won't find typical designs on display for this fashion show. Designer Paige Amdahl said, "Basically all the designs you see are going to be made out of unconventional materials."

"Fashion isn't just denim and cotton. You can make clothing out of anything you'd like," added Samantha Wright, the show’s press and media coordinator.

Eighteen students in DMACC’s Fashion Design Program are working on their show called Mixed Messages Unlocked, and the designs are made out of anything but fabric.

Student Director Breanna Owen showed some of the designs, which include one made out of duct tape and bubble wrap. Another is called the Mardi Gras dress. “It's got some feathers. It's got some bottle caps that have been spray painted. And these are toilet paper or paper towel rolls that are just kind of undone and spray painted."

The 23 unique designs will be on display at the program’s second annual fashion show, but it won’t be your typical runway show. "It's a free event. We're going to have food, drinks, live music," said Wright.

Instead of walking down a runway, models will walk around West End Salvage in Des Moines, and guests are encouraged to interact. “They can talk to the designers and figure out how did you make this," said Owen.

The students hope the show shines a light on their work. "I hope they get a feel of how good this program is because before I started here I did not realize how good of a program we had here at DMACC. It's amazing, the opportunities are endless. It's a lot of hands-on projects, which is really great,” said Wright.

The fashion show is Friday, April 15 from 5-9 p.m. at West End Salvage. You can stop in anytime. The first 100 people will get a swag bag.
