A VPN is Virtual Private Network. A Virtual Private Network is a technology. A Virtual Private Network provides the most essential safe and encrypted connection to a computing device. Other available networks, such as the internet, does not have the premium security features and can easily be misused by spammers.

A Virtual Private Network is a secured tunnel between two or more than two computing devices, connected with each other. A Virtual Private Network is an extension of a private network, over a public network. A Virtual Private Network enables the users to send and receive data in a public or a shared network, with such security that it appears as if the computing devices are directly connected with each other, through a private and closed network.

A Virtual Private Network or a VPN is a connectivity over the internet, that is fully encrypted in nature. This connectivity is of a computing device to a network. A VPN helps in ensuring safe transmission of sensitive data. VPN prevents unauthorised access of unauthorised people on the traffic to the website. The VPN user is allowed to conduct her/his work remotely, under absolute safety.

The continuous failure of less secured networks, such as internet, to provide a secured and encrypted environment for computing devices, connected over the network, led to the invention and development of the technology of Virtual Private Network or the VPN. This VPN technology allows the users from remote places and the branch offices, to have a tight secured access to the exclusive corporate applications and many other such corporate resources, which are put under premium security. The Virtual Private Network provides optimum security, management and functionality to the applications, running across VPN. Virtual Private Network technology is a boon to the data security in corporate business environment. 

How does a Virtual Private Network work? 

A Virtual Private Network or VPN makes the data travel through tunnels those are completely secured. This is done to ensure safety to the data under exchange, either sent or received.  A Virtual Private Network works as extensions of a corporate network, through encrypted connections. These encrypted connections are made over the Internet connections. A VPN works by keeping the traffic between the computing device and the network, encrypted. So, a VPN keeps the traffic absolutely private, during its transactions. Anyone in a remote location can safely connect to a network of a corporate infrastructure securely, through a VPN. A Virtual Private Network can work effectively by providing connectivity to even smart phones and tablets.

A VPN traffic transaction is fully encrypted, because a Virtual Private Network provides an encrypted connection, across the internet. This VPN connections are known as tunnels. Any device connected to a Virtual Private Network, such as a computer, a smart phone or a tablet, provides encrypted traffic, since the traffic travels through an encrypted VPN tunnel.

A Virtual Private Network provides secure remote access, which is a secure and safe method of connecting devices and users remotely with a corporate network. A Virtual Private Network uses very strong measures for authentication of users, or the connected device. The Virtual Private Network technology checks to verify whether a device meets certain requirements. These device requirements are also known as a device’s posture. The VPN allows remote connectivity only after these verifications.

Types of VPN-

VPN can be divided in two types-

1.Remote Access VPN- It securely connects a device outside a corporate office. These devices, which may be either laptops, smartphones or tablets, are known as endpoints. The remote access VPN allows the endpoints to be connected only after verification of certain specifications.

2.Site to Site VPN- It is useful in connecting the branch offices with corporate offices. This VPN is useful when distance makes direct network connectivity impossible. This VPN requires dedicated equipment.

Uses of VPN-

• VPN can very effectively hide the user’s location and IP address.
• VPN can very effectively encrypt all communications.
• VPN can make the user to watch and reach all her/his favourite contents.
