Perspex is a form of acrylic, which is scientifically known as polymethyl methacrylate sheet. Acrylic sheets are made for high impact applications, perspex signage and also have a good resistance capability against fire. These kinds of sheets are even used for bullet proofing, in vandalism protection shields and for making electronic instrument coverings.

How to clean a Perspex?

Cleaning of acrylic sheets must be done with a cleaning solution, two clean cloths, a buffer and water.

Figure out the dirt level on the sheet and inspect the dust properly to determine what kind of cleaning process must be used. For a lesser level of dust, you can just use water, while a thicker level of soot needs to be treated with a cleaner. Make sure that you do not use a cleaner that contains abrasives, ammonia, or solvents. Using of acetone, ketones and halogens is a strict no.

The Process

Take a wet cloth and apply a cleaner on it. Start scrubbing the surface of the affected sheet with the cloth. Keep scrubbing till you need to add more solution on it. When you add cleaner again, make sure you wring the cloth. Continue this process till you get the acrylic sheet clear of stains and dust. Take a new cloth and soak it again in the water and start rinsing the sheet with the cloth. To clear out the scratches, use a buffer so that you can get the acrylic sheet again in its previous condition.

Cleaning a Perspex window

Cleaning a Perspex window is same as cleaning a sheet, but it requires a little more caution. You need a soft cloth or sponge and also a mild cleaning solution. Don't use a scrubber, hard brush or harsh cleaning solution. Using a brush or scrubber can cause tiny scratches which will bring down the visibility of the window. Never use a cleaning solution that contains ammonia, alcohol or any petroleum-based cleaning agent. Using such cleaning solution can dissolve the upper surface of the window, resulting in an irregular surface.

The Process

Make a mild cleaning solution using a dish soap, or detergents that are used in laundry. Add this to a gallon of warm water. Soak the sponge in the solution and start to clean the window. Perspex windows are very sensitive so you must use only fresh or new cloth made of cotton. In case you create a scratch accidentally, you can remove it using a good quality car wax.
