Approximately 120 kilometers southwest of London,
on England's south coast, is Portsmouth, Hampshire, home to the public
University of Portsmouth. 5,200 of the more than 24,000 enrolled students are

Portsmouth University is a cutting-edge,
multidisciplinary institution with five faculties that provide applied

History
The Portsmouth and Gasport School of Science and
Art was the original name of the university when it was founded in 1870. Two
separate student unions for male and female students were established in 1911.
Following World War II, the college expanded its curriculum by including arts
and humanities courses from 1945 until 1960. In 1953, the organization renamed
itself Portsmouth College of Technology.
In addition, the college changed its name to Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1980,
growing to become one of the biggest polytechnic institutes. In 1992, it was
granted full university status by the Further and Higher Education Act of 1992.
