UGC BSR Fellowships in Science for Students: All You Need To Know

Launched by the University Grant Commission (UGC), the UGC BSR Fellowship in Science for outstanding students who are willing to carry out advanced studies and research leading to PhD degrees in sciences.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible for this UGC scholarship, an applicant must belong to the Departments of Sciences, Bio-sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and Engineering Sciences of the noted universities. Candidates must be willing to undertake advanced studies and research leading to PhD degrees in sciences.

 

Terms and conditions:

The tenure of fellowship is initially for two years under the BSR scheme. Upon expiry of this period, if the research work is found satisfactory, his/her tenure will be extended further for a period of five years under the enhanced emoluments as SRF.

The recommendation of the Committee shall be submitted to the UGC designated agency for upgradation to the level of RGNF-SRF in the prescribed proforma (Annexure- VI ).

In case the work for the first two years is not found satisfactory, an additional year will be given to him/her for improvement. In such cases work will be evaluated again after three years, and if improvement is found, the Fellow will get two more years under the BSR. Thus, the total period of fellowship is five years, with no further provision of extension.

Research Fellows would be entitled to a maximum period of 30 days of leave in a year in addition to public holidays. They are not entitled to any other vacations.

Women candidates are eligible for maternity leave of 135 days at full rates of fellowship once during the tenure of their award.

 

Award details:

Under the fellowship scheme, the GATE/NET qualified candidates will receive

1.    Fellowship of INR 24,800 per month for initial two years as JRF.

2.    Fellowship of INR 27,900 per month for remaining tenure as SRF (Senior Research Fellow).

 

The other candidates will get

1.    Fellowship of INR 21,700 per month for initial two years as JRF (Junior Research Fellow). Fellowship of INR 24,800 per month for the remaining tenure as SRF(Senior Research Fellow).

 

Under the Contingency, the candidates will get

1.    INR 12,000 per month for initial two years as JRF (Junior Research Fellow).

2.    INR 25,000 per month for the remaining tenure as SRF(Senior Research Fellow).
