Zakynthians’ incredibly pride in their cuisine and traditional recipes. They are known to use fresh home grown ingredients in their cooking, making their specialities even more delicious! It is a fact the Mediterranean diet is one of the most delicious in the world, using a combination of herbs, vegetables and of course olive oil and Zakynthians are no exception! Greeks love their food, and this is evident by the ample amount of delicious dishes they offer. It is guaranteed you will not stop eating!

Sartsa beef is probably the most popular Zakynthian dish. It is beef cooked in a casserole accompanied with tomatoes, garlic and oregano. Simply delicious!

In Greek , ‘Tyri’ means cheese and ‘ladi’ means oil, so ladotyro is a spicy cheese made from goat milk, which is then put into clay jars and filled with olive oil. Simply mouth-watering!

“Horiatiki” Salad

Horiatiki  in Greek stands for ‘village’ and is the simplest yet most popular and famed salad on the island of Zakynthos. The Horiatiki salad is a blend of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, red onions, olives and a chunky piece of feta cheese. The dressing includes olive oil, vinegar, oregano, salt a pepper. The salad is incredibly tasty and refreshing!

“Kokkinisto”

In the Greek language, ‘Kokkino’ is the colour ‘red’ which refers to dishes that are made with fresh tomato sauce. Kokkinista dishes are incredibly common throughout Greece and are made with all types of meat. The most widespread kokkinisto is made using stewed beef cooked in tomato sauce, with a blend of herbs. The taste is exquisite!

“Gemista”

‘Gemizo’ in Greek means ‘fill in’ which is appropriate for the particular dish since it is made by stuffing tomatoes, onions, peppers and potatoes with a mixture of minced meat, rice and herbs cooked in a blazing oven. The result is amazing!

Skordostoumbi is famed dish in the Ionian Islands which is made with aubergines mixed with large amount of garlic. Although simple, the taste is absolutely scrumptious!

Briam is a renowned dish in Zakynthos and is made using a mixture of fresh vegetables which vary according to the season. Briam consists of a combination of veggies which are roasted in the oven. Most locals add some olive oil and herbs to accentuate the taste of the dish. The most common vegetables used are potatoes, peppers, carrots and courgettes! Absolutely mouth-watering!

Mantolato is a special traditional dessert made from roasted almonds, egg white, sugar and honey. You can delight on this dessert without feeling guilty since the ingredients used are all healthy. Yummy!

Pastelli is also a popular and nutritious dessert made on the island of Zakynthos. It is made with almonds and sesame oil, and is most commonly found cut in bars, so that it can be enjoyed by hand.
