There is no better time of the year to plan a surprise than on Valentine's Day. Whether it's a small surprise or a big one, take the extra step with your Valentine's Day celebration and add a surprise for that special someone.

Surprise Basics

The most important principle here is one that is used by magicians and con men: Misdirection. If your plan is to surprise your love with an extravagant meal, talk about the great present you are getting her or the trip you planned. If she believes that something else is coming, the surprise will be just that, which is exactly what you want. Do not expect your surprise to hinge on the fact that you forget about the holiday altogether. There are too many reminders, such as decorations everywhere, for anyone to believe that you could actually forget to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Keep Her in the Dark

Sure, you can pick her up and make her wear a blindfold, but having her show up on her own, unsure about what to expect will make whatever reward you have for her that much greater. The ultimate version of this plan would be to send a limo for your lover, have it pick her up and deliver her to an unknown-to-her location, such as a fancy restaurant, a bed and breakfast, or the airport for a weekend getaway.

The Bait and Switch

Switching things up on your significant other is an excellent way to ensure a surprise. Announce a family dinner or a reunion at a restaurant around Valentine's Day, but not on the day itself. When you show up, the surprise is that it's just the two of you. Book a private dining room at a restaurant, or whisk your partner away for an intimate dinner or an evening on the town.
