Plastic is used widely in every aspect of modern lifestyle, from a microchip to our daily essentials. Despite all the controversies, plastics contribute significantly to our everyday living style. There are vast categories of plastics that we use daily, namely, PVC, acrylic, PET, HDPE, etc., that are outstanding and incredible in their performance.

The increasing demand for plastic is not because of low product prices. It is also due to its multiple practical aspects, which are subject to its low poundage, acid antagonism, and flexibility. Plastics comprise long molecular chains, popularly known as polymers. They are formulated by linking the monomers repeatedly. Similarly, the synthetically produced plastics come from mineral oil, natural gas or coal. Among the worldwide production of oil and gases, 4% of it is meant to manufacture plastics.

In the proliferation of synthetic plastics, some semi-synthetics are made from natural polymers such as cellulose. The most standard types of plastics, comprehended as mass plastics, are polyethene, polypropylene, PVC, polystyrene, PET, and polyurethane.

Popular Types Of Plastics Available In The Market

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET): It is one of the most popular categories of plastic that we come across. We can get rigid and flexible plastic accessories from it depending on its manufacturing. It has a unique molecular construction and acts as an amazing water and gas barrier. It is also resistant to both weather and other chemicals.

The basic uses of this type of plastic are in manufacturing soft drinks bottles, cooking oil bottles, water bottles, frozen ready-meal trays, polar fleece, and packaging trays.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE): This plastic is highly enduring and strong due to its density factor. It is a solid material which can tolerate high temperatures and strong chemicals. These plastics are very incredible in their performance. You can reuse and recycle it in different ways. Plastic is often used as a cleaning solution, and soap contains.

Some other uses are - shopping bags, freezer bags, bottle caps, pipes, protective helmets, vehicle fuel tanks, protective helmets, wood-plastic composites etc.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): This type of plastic requires minimal production cost. They are resistant to biological damage and other strong chemicals. PVC is the most popular known plastic. It is easy to mould this type of plastic and give it different shapes. Due to its high versatility, it can take a variety of forms and shapes that can be employed for multiple uses. They are very rigid and lightweight and can be used to make faux-leather materials like pleather.

Uses of PVC are numerous in the market. They can be used to make cladding, water bottles, plastic dustbins, vinyl records, cables, signage, types of furniture etc.

Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE): It is a non-reactive type of material and can resist high temperatures. This type of plastic is more enduring than HDPE (High-density counterpart).

Everyday uses of LDPE include - Trays, work surfaces, containers, lids, machine parts, ‘6-ring’ drink holders, protective shells, drink cartons, computer hardware casings, bin bags, laundry bags, playground fixtures (slides and the like).

Polypropylene (PP): These are very Robust and adaptable. It is a very hard-wearing plastic. When polypropylene is melted, it evolves to be one of the most efficacious materials for moulding purposes. In enclosing that, it has quite a high forbearance to high temperatures, comparable to other plastics, and is believed to be a food-safe material.

Typical uses of this plastic type include - Clothing, hobbyist model, surgery tools and supplies, food containers, bottle caps, crisp bags, straws, kettles, lunch boxes, and packing tape.

Plastics are known for their durability and flexibility. They do not conduct electricity and are hence used as insulators. They help to insulate wiring, and thermosets are employed in switches, handles and light fittings. They have wide benefits in our daily lives. It depends upon us and how we use them. Hope this blog helped you understand the varieties of plastics we use daily. Let us pledge to responsibly use, reuse, recycle, and dispose of plastic materials!
