THE TRUTH ABOUT GERMANY AS STUDY ABROAD OPTION
In the previous
article, we’ve come up with some of the essential features of higher education
in Germany. We had shared the information on Germany’s affordable education
system, fully financed programs by the government of Germany in all public
universities, and its state of the art infrastructure in carrying out
world-class research in engineering, robotics, and management sciences. We also
have shared insights on the dual education system and scholarships available
for Indian students in Germany. The present article is a step bit deviated from
the previous one. To offer you the full insight before making the final
decision, we are currently sharing additional insights to bridge the gap
between theory and practice. The aim is to serve as a wakeup call to those who
take everything in positive stride and to make understand the relevance of
developing a healthy scepticism.
PEDAGOGY MAY BE OUTDATED
Since all the courses in public universities are funded by the government, the
majority of the courses are outdated owing to excessive government
interference. Centralized control over universities at times comes in the way
of meeting global competitiveness.
COURSES TAUGHT IN GERMAN
Germany is not well equipped to provide training to international graduates. As
such students often feel a need to become well versed with the local language
which can be both difficult and time-consuming.
TESTS ARE NOT STANDARDIZED
Unlike the case of the United States and the UK, universities in Germany though
have the best of minds but in the operational front, the conduct of the
universities isn’t much standardized. As a result, university scoring doesn’t
highlight the real performance of the graduates.
TOP DOWN NOT BOTTOM UP
Owing to a highly bureaucratic structure much of the control rests with the
government trickling further down to universities and colleges. As such
students’ aspirations and targeted outcomes from the course program aren’t met
in full measure. International graduates have to constantly upgrade their
competencies from alternative channels of learning and application.
THE BOLOGNA SYSTEM
Germany has three-tier degree system of the European Higher Education Area which
is recognized under the Bologna System. Rather than the old one-tier ‘long’
programs, Germany now offers undergraduate courses which result in a Bachelor’s
degree and postgraduate courses which result in a Master’s or Ph.D.
(Doctorate).
TEACHING
APPROACH DIFFERS
Instructors differ in their approach to training graduates. Young instructors
are much better equipped to deal with the latest changes in technology and
share insights than the experienced lot who have stayed in the university for
long. International students in majority pursue higher education for
professional growth and thus staying with the times is absolutely essential. As
a rule of thumb, seek young instructors for STEM courses and experienced
teachers for language and fine arts.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Finding a job after graduation is real difficult. As a result, it is highly
imperative to develop a strong professional network or study in Germany with a
firm intent of coming back and serve in the home country.
