The Inside Story with Mariketty of Thalassa

The culinary rite of passage for tourists in Goa is the legendary eatery Thalassa. Perched on a hilltop, overlooking the magnificent Indian Ocean and picturesque small Vagator beach, Thalassa combines the greatness of Greek hospitality with Goan joie de vivre. The design and ambience of Thalassa transports you back to Greece instantly with its white decor, terrazzo flooring, rustic wooden shelters and cane furniture. The lilting music that picks up tempo as the sun sets, along with the heady cocktails and the sumptuous spread, all add to an irreplaceable feeling that one has come to expect of Thalassa. “I personally stop by every table. I want people to leave with a smile. This is my aim. Seeing people enjoying themselves is my best reward. Of course the location helps too,” says Mariketty of Thalassa. The Greek word “Thalassa” translates directly to “The Sea” in English and the restaurant looks straight at the magnificent sea ahead.

I can see that we bond well with Nibhrant, the founder and his ideas and my ideas fit and complement each other.” Mariketty, who came to Goa 28 years ago on a holiday, was taken in by Goa’s energy. “I wanted to visit India, not Goa, India. And while traveling someone suggested to visit Goa and I did. Because I came from an island, the environment was perfect for me. It was destiny rather than my choice. I started at the Flea Market in Anjuna and now here I am!”

With distinct white hues, the restaurant comes alive every so often with a traditional, joyous Greek dance that invites all patrons to the dance floor. The dance called the “Sirtaki” entails people huddling up in a circle and dancing to the tunes and steps of Zorba the Greek and is also accompanied by the smashing of plates on the floor and showering of flowers on those partaking in the celebrations. The greatest celebration at Thalassa is obviously culinary. Mariketty says, “Since I have a live charcoal counter, any barbeque dish (be it fish, meat or vegetables) tastes great. I would always go for something on the grill. For fish lovers, I make the most amazing fish with Greek olive oil. Good olive oil is just the perfect condiment for almost any dish. Most of my ingredients (olive oil, olives, feta cheese etc.) are all imported from Greece. It makes a big difference in the preparation.”
