The Basic Self-Defense Techniques Everyone Should Know
When it comes to self-defense, the more knowledge and information you have, the better. While the purpose of this article isn't to teach you extreme self-defense martial arts, we want to ensure that you walk out of a potentially dangerous situation as unhurt as possible. Even though we won’t teach you hitting what part of a person’s throat will choke them out, these techniques could help save your life one day!
The Best Tactic is Not to Fight
The first thing you need to know about self-defense is that you should never resort to fighting at all. Your top priority should be to avoid physical engagements at all costs. If the other person is taunting you to a fight, keep your emotions in check and let it go. If the opposing party is a thief asking for your wallet and mobile, don’t hesitate or fight back. Material objects are never worth getting hurt over. However, in the case that violence in inevitable, here are a few techniques that you could use to fight back.
Raise Your Voice
The first thing you need to do is raise your voice and starting causing a disturbance so people around converge at your position. As soon as someone is trying to get close, push them firmly and yell “Back off”. This will help gain the attention of passing folks, and potentially nearly police officers, which could be enough enough to scare away most attackers.
Target the Weak Parts
Before you decide to fight honorably, remember that this is not a wrestling match. It’s a street fight and you need to use any and all tactics to escape unhurt. The best way to do this is to target body parts that give out easily. Here’s a list of where to target, and how you could target them.
- Eyes: Thumb to the eyes
- Nose: Smash your palm against the tip of their nose firmly
- Groin: Knee to the groin will discombobulate all attackers
- Behind the Knee: Hitting someone in that area will make them fall to their knees instantly
Anything In Your Hand is a Weapon
The thing that makes most people panic in these critical situations is that they’re unarmed. Sure, you don’t have any weapon, but you can still use the things you have to the best of your abilities. You have car keys? Stick them between two fingers in a closed palm and you have a makeshift knife that won’t maim, but will hurt seriously. Don’t have a pepper spray? Even a simple perfume will do the job just fine. Got knocked to the ground? Get a handful of sand and chuck it at the attacker. In a fight, all you need is a second of distraction to gain the upper hand.
Try to Keep Your Distance
If you’re reading this article, there’s a good chance that you’re either short or don’t weigh much. Most of the time, you’ll be fighting people bigger and heavier than you are. In these scenarios, you want to keep your distance. Getting close to them means that they’ll put you in a choke hold which will be difficult to get out of. Keep your distance and use your speed. You might not be that fast, but you’re definitely faster than a guy that weighs more than you.
