Summer Activities That Boost Your Kids’ Mental Energy
A recent National Assessment of Educational Progress survey suggests young kids are not reading for pleasure as much as they used to. About a decade ago, more than half of 9-year-olds reported reading for fun. Today, that number has dropped to just 42% — and it appears it could continue to drop if parents don’t step in and do something about it.
Encouraging your kids to read this summer can boost their mental energy. You should also encourage them to participate in other activities throughout the summertime that can work wonders for their mental energy. Check them out below.
Walking
About 57% f American parents worry their kids don’t spend enough time outside. If you fall into this category, simply telling your kids to go for a walk in your neighborhood every day or two could increase their mental energy. It’ll help them get their fair share of fresh air. It might even motivate them to want to stay outside and get exercise in other ways once they see how much fun other kids are having.
Bike Riding
Once upon a time, kids loved riding their bikes up and down the street all day long. About one-third of American children rode bikes regularly ten years ago. But these days, only about 20% of kids ride bikes. Buying bikes for your kids and sending them outside to ride them is another great way to improve their mental energy this summer. It’s also a wonderful way to help your kids explore the world in a safe and controlled environment.
Swimming
Is there anything better than taking a dip in the swimming pool on a hot summer day? If you have access to a pool, take full advantage of it by letting your kids swim as often as they’d like this summer. It’s an effective way to help kids get exercise while also allowing them to have fun at the same time. It’s one of the many benefits of swimming that they can soak up this summer.
Playing Sports
If your kids play sports throughout the fall, winter, and spring, you may want to give them a break in the summer. But it wouldn’t hurt to keep their skills sharp by signing them up for a baseball, basketball, or trying out for cheerleading camp. This is also a great time to make sure that your kids have all of the necessary gear for their fall sports. For cheerleading, consider looking into new cheer shoes, practice gear, backpacks, or new poms. This is also the perfect time for cheer coaches to look into custom-designed cheer uniforms for the upcoming season.
