Commercial truck drivers in Australia earn a good amount by working independently or with a trucking company. With proper training and the right licence, you can easily start your career on the roads and get a stable income to earn a livelihood. But where should you start?

Get an MC Licence

An MC licence in Sydney and elsewhere can help you drive any heavy-duty vehicle on Australian roads, like prime movers, low loader dollies and combinations, B-doubles, and even road trains. There are several eligibility requirements for getting the licence. You should also have sufficient knowledge of trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles to get this licence.

A car driver’s licence for 1 year

To become a commercial truck driver, you should first have a car driver’s licence for at least a year before you apply for the higher licence. So if you have been driving on Australian roads for quite some time, you can apply to become a commercial truck driver.

Enrol in a trucking drivers’ learning school

You can enrol in a truck driving school before applying for the driving tests and medical assessments. You will learn the nitty-gritty of commercial truck driving there, enough to train and prepare you for the driving tests that will follow. Also, you will get a certificate of competence to apply for the licence you are planning to derive.

How much time does it take to start driving a truck?

It may take anywhere between three weeks to 6 months to get your licence, depending on the type of licence, the type of program you have enrolled in, your learning ability, and the type of truck you are planning to drive.

There are three types of licence - Class A, B and C. The class A licence is the most common one for truck drivers allowing you to drive vehicles with a GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) of 26,001 pounds.
