SharePoint 2010 vs. SharePoint 2013: What has changed?
SharePoint 2010 in 2010 was a big release by Microsoft and was embraced by many. Many companies either migrated to SharePoint 2010 or opted for a new SharePoint 2010 solution at the time. But it is now 2013 and Microsoft has yet another release for us. Microsoft has now released SharePoint 2013 and though it is not a very big release in the sense that there are not many big changes but it does have several small changes. The upgrade from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013 is explained below:
- SharePoint 2013 consists of minor architectural changes from the IT perspective. That said there are many small changes and changes affecting the specific workloads, but nothing that would require one to complete sweep the applications for changes.
- SharePoint 2013 does have some changes and new feature in several key areas like WCM, Social, Search and mobile Access and these are some major changes.
- There are numerous updates in team sites, my sites, communities, ECM which includes cross-browser and cross-device availability, better offline options, team work features (tasks, project management light, discussions), and significantly better sharing features.
- SharePoint 2013 does retain all the feature from SharePoint 2010 and builds on it.
- While moving from SharePoint 2010 to the current version it is possible to retain the content database as in 2010 content. In a broader sense the SharePoint 2010 site will remain a SharePoint 2010 site but will work on the SharePoint 2013 configuration.
Thus if you had any questions floating around in your mind as to whether SharePoint 2010 is a major release or not then this article does give you a brief overview of the difference. However before planing any major changes or deciding to jump to SharePoint 2013, it would be well worth it to take advice of a SharePoint Consulting firm. They have been in the field for like ever and are in a better position to explain what changes have been made and as to what is new in SharePoint 2013. A SharePoint consultant may also be able to check your system and inform you as to how the changes are going affect the current installation.
