Court marriages have become common due to several reasons. Some do it to keep it a low key affair while some do it when they belong to different religions. Court marriages can also take place when someone is getting married against the wish of their families. As it is a neutral ground for marriage as well as is a legal way to get married hence people prefer this way to save their time, money and energy spent on any normal wedding.

For a court marriage to get an official certificate from the marriage registrar’s office the couple is required to follow the complete process of court marriage. The couple is required to have three witnesses who can be family members, family friends, friends as well as colleagues. If the couple has attained the legal age they can go ahead for the court marriage even when their parents are against it as far as they have three witnesses with them. The witnesses are required to be present at the time of exchanging vows and while signing the marriage register.

The witness role begins after the couple files a notice of intended marriage in the specified form to the marriage registrar of the district stating the intention to get married. The court checks all the documents to determine whether the couple is eligible to get married as per the law. Once no objection is received against the marriage and the bride and the groom, they have to reach at the marriage registrar’s office to sign a declaration. However, the declaration has to be signed in order to accept each other as their lawfully wedded husband and wife respectively in the presence of three witnesses before the registrar.

Also, the witnesses have to sign the documents and also provide their PAN card and residential proof. The registrar will enter the details in the marriage certificate register after the declaration has been signed by the bride, groom, witnesses, and registrar. Then a certificate of marriage will be issued to the couple as a proof of legal and official marriage.
