Verbio Vereinigte BioEnergie AG - a German bio-energy is all poised to produce corn ethanol and RNG (Renewable Natural Gas) at the site of a non-functional cellulosic ethanol plant in Nevada.

The company is in the process of setting up an anaerobic digester on the site. This digester is estimated to have a capacity of converting about 100,000 tons of corn stover into renewable natural gas which will be utilized in the gas pipeline system of the country. The renowned bio-energy producer is hoping to begin the production by fall in year 2021.

Greg Northrup- the president and CEO of Verbio in the North American region said that Ethanol is converted into renewable natural gas in Germany and they are all set to bring the concept to the U.S.

Producers of biogas to CNG plants say that RNG (Renewable Natural Gas) is relatively expensive to produce than conventional natural gas, but it won’t be a deal of loss for producers as they can easily make profits by selling credits to refineries and fuel suppliers across California.

7 Million Gallons of Gasoline Production in Initial Stages

The failed site in Nevada was run by DuPont Industrial Biosciences for less than 2 years with not much of luck and it was bought by Verbio Vereinigte BioEnergie AG in November 2018. Verbio expects to produce about 7 million gallons of gasoline in initial runs. The quantity is quite encouraging; however, it will require a whopping 75,000 to 100,000 tons of corn stover every year. According to Northrup, the availability will be right there within 50 miles of the plant. The production quantity will increase to 20 million gallons of gasoline later on.

The other side of operation is expected to begin by 2022 which will include the production of corn ethanol production. The leftover from ethanol production will be mixed with corn stover to generate renewable natural gas.

Compressed biogas plants across the world find the project quite encouraging.

Plethora of Opportunities for RNG Market

Greg Northrup feels that there is a lot of scope for the RNG market as the demanded quantity of RNG in California was not being met. There was a demand of billions of gallons which they fell short of by a huge margin. They were not able to produce more than 10 percent of it. It is not just Northrup, but Mark Mba-Wright- an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Iowa State University who shares the same thoughts. He also said that there is a huge potential for a robust RNG industry in Iowa.
