Requirements to attain a Past Master Degree
In
Freemasonry, a Master Mason is a brother who has been passed and raised in a
legally constituted Lodge. In 15th century, a Master Mason was a workman who
was qualified, experienced and trained. He had the authority to teach his trade
to a younger and inexperienced worker. A Master Mason was “a scholar of
authority”.
A Master
Mason who is no longer the installed Master of a Lodge is known as the Past
Master and he passes his chair to the presiding officer of his Lodge. The
presiding officer of a Masonic Lodge is known as the Worshipful Master.
Past Master Degree
This Degree
was put into operation to try the qualifications of a Master Mason before he
could become a Master of a Lodge. No Mason could preside over a Lodge unless he
was admitted to this Degree. After obtaining this degree only, a member can
offer himself to preside in a Master’s Lodge. The Past Master’s Degree is
conferred to the Freemason by Royal Arch Masons, acting upon the order of a
Grand Master.
Past
Master’s Degree is in purple color and the apron is of white lambskin bordered
