Programs We Love: Girls on the Run

 

            Girls on the Run’s mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident and that’s definitely a mission we can agree with at Fresh Kidz. Girls on the Run offers programs for girls in third through eighth grades. The elementary age program explores lessons that encourage positive emotional, social, mental, and physical development and gives girls an opportunity to discuss the challenges they face. Girls on the Run also stresses the importance of physical activity and the mentors and coaches teach the girls in the program how to incorporate running and other types of exercise into their daily lives. In the middle school program, Heart & Sole, girls have a structured space to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections, and develop life skills while coaches introduce strength and conditioning exercises to the group.

            Girls on the Run started in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a group of 13 girls. Today there are more than 200 councils in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and more than 185,000 girls have participated in the program.
