PINDAD - We Manufacture and Export Quality Military and Defense Products

In the 1980s the Indonesian government increasingly vigorously promoted technology transfer programs, this is when the idea emerged to change the status of Pindad to a limited liability company. Based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia No.47 of 1981, the Agency for the Assessment of Technology Application (BPPT), which has been established since 1978, must pay more attention to the technological transformation process set by the Indonesian government, including the procurement of machines for industrial needs.

The change in Pindad's status was motivated by the limited space for Pindad to move as an industry because it was bound by regulations and economic dependence on the Dephankam budget so that it could not develop its production activities. In addition, Pindad is also considered to be burdening Dephankam because of the considerable research and development costs and investment. Therefore, Dephankam suggests a separation between war making activities and war support activities. Pindad's activities in producing military infrastructure and equipment are part of the war support activities so they must be separated from dephankam and become a limited liability company whose shares are owned by the Indonesian government.
