Muscular Dystrophy Treatment in India with Ayurveda
Muscular Dystrophy is a disease that results in the
weakening of the affected person’s muscles – eventually inhibiting all types of
movements. In some severe cases it may also affect the cardiac muscles, causing
serious heart problems. Primarily, nine different types of Muscular Dystrophy
are observed in humans; the most common among these is the Duchenne Muscular
Dystrophy (DMD). It mostly occurs in males, though, it can also affect females
as well. There are a number of remedies for Muscular Dystrophy treatment in Ayurveda
and we shall learn about them in the article below.
Causes of Muscular Dystrophy
Muscular dystrophy is usually attributed to genetic defects,
and it is passed from generation to generation. The probability of occurrence
of the disease in male child is 0.0005, which means that one in every 5000 male
children exhibits the disease. For a female child to have MD, both the mother
and the father should carry the defective gene. This is why this disease is
less commonly observed in females.
Muscular Dystrophy
treatment in Ayurveda
Since the disease is genetic, there is no complete cure for
it, but by following a strict Ayurvedic therapy and Yogic discipline, one can
enjoy a normal life. There are a number of methods for treating MD in Ayurveda.
The most common ones among these are:
Panchakarma therapy: This
means five therapies, which are Snehana (dry
massaging), Abhyanga (massaging with herb-infused oil), Swedana (steam
therapy), Nasya (intranasal drug administration), and Basti (enema of herbal
oils).
Elakizhi: This is
the sweat therapy which restores the strength in soft tissues, joints and
muscles. It is also known as Patra Pinda
Sweda.
Navarakizhi: This
method is also known as Shashtika Shali
Pinda Sweda in Sanskrit. It is a type of massage that is done with a
special type of rice (Shali) that
grows in 60 days (shastika means sixty). This
massage strengthens the muscles and re-energizes the body.
Kashaya Vasti: This
is basically Ayurvedic enema which is done using medicated decoction.
Anuvasana vasti: This
is yet another form of Ayurvedic enema that is done by using fats and oils.
Masha Pinda Sweda: It
is sudation therapy that is given to the patient by preparing a bolus from Masha (Black Gram). This procedure
involves both Snehana and Swedana.
