Jessica is a widowed former English teacher. Jessica retains her ties to all of her old acquaintances and continues to live in Cabot Cove, a small seaside town in Maine, despite fame and money. She never lets her success get to her head. Every episode of the show often begins with Jessica saying, "Tonight on Murder, She Wrote…" Jessica consistently proves to be more observant than the official case detectives, who are virtually always eager to detain the most likely culprit. She helps the police find the real culprit by meticulously putting the pieces together and asking insightful questions. Murders happened so frequently. As she was 63 years old and unsure that she could keep up with the pace now demanded of her, Lansbury revealed her weariness of her commitment to the series in August 1988. She notably mentioned the change from seven to eight days to shoot each episode.

As a result, Murder, She Wrote began production on its fifth season that fall, with the series finale likely to air in May 1989 and the chance that it would halt production at the conclusion. However, a solution was developed that allowed Lansbury to go on while also providing her with some downtime. This made it possible for several supporting characters to receive important stories.

Lansbury limited her appearances to multiple episodes during the course of the following two seasons, only making an appearance in the first and last. Murder, She Wrote got multiple award nominations during its twelve-year run. With twelve, one for each season, Lansbury holds the record for the most Emmy nominations for outstanding lead actress in a drama series. Another record is that she has never triumphed. Three Emmy nominations were given to Mary Dodson for her work on Murder, She Wrote as the art director for 102 of the 264 episodes of the television show. [21] The programme received 41 Emmy nominations altogether.
