Land mobile radio (LMR) systems are used mainly by first responder organizations such as police departments, emergency medical service providers, and fire departments. In addition, LMR systems are used by public work organizations and companies with vast vehicle fleets and a wide network of field staff.

According to a report by Transparency Market Research, the global land mobile radio systems market is poised to grow at a strong CAGR of 16.9% from 2014 to 2020, driven largely by their rising demand in mission-critical operations. This market is estimated to develop from a value of US$10.57 billion in 2013 to US$30.6 billion by 2020.

U.S. Army Explores Multinational Radio Platforms for Communication

In June this year, the U.S. Army began exploring the possibility of American and other allied tactical land mobile radio systems talking to one another across countries. A proof-of-concept testing was performed in Europe during multinational exercises before developing formal requirements. The aim of the exploration was to be able to allow communication between one country and another country’s radio sets. Direct communication via land mobile radio systems with an allied military has so far been considered to be technically impossible.

The operating concept of the U.S. Army was unveiled last year and in January 2015, 2,000 soldiers from five countries – Hungary, Canada, the U.K., the Netherlands, and the U.S. – tested a device called the tactical voice bridge with the help of 12 different kinds of radios. The exercise was conducted at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany. The Army hopes to overcome issues associated with interoperability and communication lapses and provide seamless radio-bridging.

Growing Shift from Analog to Digital Communication Systems

The extreme significance of communication in efficient mission-critical operations is a major factor boosting the demand for land mobile radio systems. The integration of LMR systems with expanding long-term evolution (LTE) networks has also contributed toward the growth of the land mobile radio systems market. Apart from this, the rising adoption of LMR systems by corporate users and military as well as transportation sectors has proved to be a major growth driver for the global LMR systems market.

The shift from analog communication systems to digital communication systems is an ongoing trend that has had a positive impact on the land mobile radio systems market. Digital LMR systems offer extended battery life and reduced power consumption, making them the communication system of choice.

Thanks to the numerous initiatives of the U.S. government to enhance communication within the armed forces and transform the military structure, North America is the largest land mobile radio systems market in the world.

The growing importance of LMR systems has resulted in strong competition among leading market players, who have been offering high-speed cellular networks to sustain themselves in the developing market. The prominent participants in the land mobile radio systems market include RELM Wireless Corporation, TE Connectivity Ltd., Honeywell International, Inc., Thales Group S.A., Motorola Solutions, Inc., Harris Corporation, JVC KENWOOD Corporation, Nokia Solutions and Networks, Airbus DS Communications, and Raytheon Company.
