Tryst with the Hindu Mythology by celebrating the zealous festival of Janmashtmi in Vrindavan and Mathura, this year the Janmashtmi will be celebrating on August 18, 2014. Janmashtmi is celebrated across India, the birth of Lord Krishna is a popular religious belief associated with this festival of happiness and joy. Lord Krishna was the Avatar of God Vishnu, who took birth in Mathura and spent his childhood days in Vrindavan and Mathura.
Therefore the celebration is at peak in Vrindavan and Mathura as the style of celebrating Janmashtmi is much unique and a month long celebration starting from Monsoon. In Vrindavan, there are more than 4000 temples where you can witness the beauty of this festival, the silver and gold made Jhule or swings is in on display during the traditional caravan, Dahi Handi or Earthen pots of butter or curd is hung up over the streets.
It is more of a holy-type festival in Gokul, people get plunged in the joy and roam around the streets to break the earthen pots, the whole scene would give you glimpse of 5000 years old Mathura and Vrindavan. Temples all over India, majorly in Uttar Pradesh are being decorated with fresh flowers and lights, people observe fast on this day. The devotees chant prayers or Krishna Geet and sing hymns.
According to Hindu mythology, there is a popular belief that any wish made while the earthen pot full of Milk or butter is rocked, comes true.
Devotees present panchamrit and Chappan bhog (56 dishes) to welcome lord Krishna and afterwards break their fast with this. More than 8 to 9 Lakhs devotees visit Mathura and Vrindavan to witness the grand celebration of Janmashtmi.
