Insulation is a great supplement to loft insulation. Cavity walls are two outer masonry walls that are separated by a hollow or cavity space. Masonry slowly draws rainwater and humidity through the wall, and the cavity is a way to drain water back out through special holes in the base of the wall system. Cavity wall insulation can make an enormous difference in your energy bills, because up to 35% of your heat can dissipate through cavity walls if your home has them.

Insulating cavity walls could easily save up to £200, or $350 per year if your house lacks cavity wall insulation. Cavity wall insulation will pay for itself in about 5 years in savings in your energy bills. If you are unsure about whether you have cavity walls and if so whether they are insulated, you will need to call a cavity wall specialist to assess the situation for you. If all houses with uninsulated cavity walls were to be supplied with cavity wall insulation, the energy saved could heat 1.4 million homes in a year. Cavity wall insulation is quick and relatively inexpensive to have installed. It is injected or blown into the cavity between the two outer walls and takes about half a day for a standard three-bedroom house.
