What is Sadaqah Jariyah – Best ways of performing Sadaqah
“Indeed, it is we who bring the dead to life
and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things
we have accounted for in a clear register.” (Qur’an, 36:12)
What is Sadaqah Jariyah?
Sadaqah is a form of
charity in Islam that is completely voluntary for the one giving it. Giving
charity in this way is highly rewardable, and there are no rules for the giver
in terms of when it should be given, where, how much, or to whom.
Sadaqah Jariyah is a
special type of voluntary charity: It is ongoing. The recipient will benefit
from the charity continually, and it is believed that this means that the giver
will be receiving good deeds for a long time – even after their death. For
example, giving somebody some food could be considered an act of Sadaqah, as it
is helping to alleviate hunger for those in need. The provision of food itself
tends to help the recipient, once. Giving water, through establishing a water
hand pump or well, however, is an act of Sadaqah
Jariyah. A water well allows people to obtain water whenever they wish,
and the longevity of the intervention means that it will benefit people for
generations to come. In turn, the donation to water projects will continue
benefiting the giver for years to come, even long after they have passed away.
For this reason, many Muslims strive to give Sadaqah donation, so that they may reap as
many rewards as possible and seek closeness to Allah (SWT). Read
