How to paint your Jeep Wrangler Hardtop

Painting the hardtop on your Jeep Wrangler is a great way to bring some life an old, faded top. Equipment fiberglass paint if you will take a little time to prepare before spray painting on it. Scratches and dings can be fixed before you paint with the fiberglass resin and fabric of your local car parts store. Paint is available in many colors you can choose the one you need for your project. Be sure to use high quality paint for best results.

Nylon abrasive pads

Upholstery fabric

Enamel Spray Paint

Remove the hardtop from your Jeep and set a couple of 2-by-4 to keep the ground. Mask off glass and other areas you do not want painted with painter's tape and masking paper.

Scratch the top surface with an abrasive pad of high quality nylon. There are several brands available in the department of painting auto parts store for you to choose from.

Wipe the surface with a cloth hardtop tack to remove any dust that may be on the surface. This is a good time to inspect the top of cracks and other damage so that it can be repaired before painting if necessary.

Spray hardtop with a thin, even coat of paint. Use high quality enamel on your high durability and grip. Better quality paints seem to work better and be held in place longer on these vertices be selective in your choice.

Allow the paint to dry before applying another coat. You need to do two or three coats to get good coverage. Continue adding coats until you reach the color and coverage you want on top, allowing the paint to dry between coats. Can check the exact once dry they differ from brand to brand.

Remove masking and allow the top to sit and dry after the final coat is applied. Wait 24 to 48 hours after painting to reinstall the hardtop on your Jeep.

Tips & Warnings

If you work outside, choose a place that is clean and free of dust and a day that is not windy. If you are working in your driveway, try watering the driveway before painting to control dust.

Top with spray enamel paint high quality for best results. Paining with a brush will leave scratches in the paint and it will be difficult to do the same on the textured surface.
