How to Improve Comprehensive Ranking System Scores for Express Entry
In 2015, the Canadian
government launched a point-based immigration system known as Federal Express
Entry System. Since then, Express Entry has been managing and processing PR
applications from skilled foreign workers for the three most popular economic
immigration programs:
·
Federal Skilled Worker Class
·
Federal Skilled Trades Class
·
Canadian Experience Class
It completely overtook the
old, first-come, first-served selection system and select applicants from a
pool based on their ranking score. All the candidates get a score and
a rank using a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Canada PR points are given to
each one in the pool under the CRS, and those with higher ranking receive an Invitation
to Apply (ITA) for a Canadian PR visa. An ITA qualifies them to submit an eAPR,
i.e., an electronic application for permanent residence in Canada, along with
supporting documents and application fees.
As an Express Entry
candidate, you need to know that improving your score beyond the minimum
criteria will improve your chances of obtaining an ITA for Canada PR.

Key factors to improve
overall CRS scores
Language Proficiency
As a fluent English or French
speaker, you can score up to 260 points. There is always a room for little
improvement in your approved language test score. You may prepare and re-take a
language test to improve the score for all four abilities, including speaking,
writing, listening and reading.
Even a slight increase in
your score can bring a huge improvement in your overall CRS ranking, i.e., to
reach an advanced level of CLB 9 or above. Also, a bilingual candidate can take
language tests in both the official language, i.e., English and French and
claim up to 50 points.
Education
It is a highly valued CRS
selection factor. You may increase your score by getting your education
assessed and get up to 200 points. For human capital, you get 150 points, and
for Canadian work experience or/and language proficiency, you get 50 points. While,
with a bachelor’s degree assessment, you may reach up to 170 points.
Apart from getting an ECA
report, you can also grab more points by completing another additional study
program level.
Work Experience
It is a good idea to update
your profile with additional skilled work experience, making it more than 8
years. It’ll help you grab maximum points on the CRS table.
Spousal Factors
If you are applying with a
spouse or common-law partner, you may claim additional points to increase your
CRS score. Your spouse’s education level, language proficiency, and work
experience can get you additional points. You may get up to 40 points for
spousal factors, i.e., 20 for language ability and 10 for Canadian work
experience and education. If your spouse or partner submits a language test
result or an ECA report, you can get more points.
Furthermore, you must
carefully review both the profiles, and if your partner’s profile is equally
strong, you both can create an Express Entry profile as principal applicants. This
will double the chances of obtaining an ITA.
Provincial Nomination
You may apply for Express
Entry via a PNP category and get additional 600 points for a provincial
nomination, which will guarantee you an ITA at an upcoming EE draw. Most of the
Canadian provinces run a provincial nomination program that is aligned with
Federal Express Entry System. They usually select an applicant interested in
permanently moving to any province and has the right skill set to contribute to
provincial needs. For selection, each PNP has a unique eligibility requirement
and application process.
To conclude, we would advise
all the Express Entry candidates to follow their dreams and pave their path
towards success with utmost precision. You must explore all your Canada immigration
