Many young MMA fighter ask what is the proper technique to throw punches in the face. We have highlighted some important tips for you. Let’s find out what they are:

Aim for the Throat

It is important when you are throwing a punch, target only specific areas otherwise your punches will be all over the place and there will be a risk of hand injury. Therefore, experts advise young boxers to aim for the throat instead of aiming for the top half of opponent’s head. Even if you are wearing MMA gloves, which are supposed to protect hands from getting injured. Sometimes the impact is so hard that your narrow bones aren’t strong enough to take.

Throw Punches as Straight as Possible

The best strikes in MMA fight are quick, straight and accurate. You often see fighters throw wild swings at each other, which serves no purpose. Even if those strikes hit the target, they are not accurate enough, instead they give opponents a chance to counter attack. So the best technique to follow is to throw punches in straight line, and make sure when these punches land your hands are fully extended. It will also add more power and striking range for you.

Use Inner Two Knuckles

When you hit someone in the face, the impact should be from using your inner two knuckles only. Index and middle fingers are the ones to take the hit. Another point to note is that when you swing your arm, your fist should be rotated and on impact your thumb should be pointing downwards. This technique not only improve transfer of power but also you are less likely to injure your hand. Practice as much as possible using these two knuckles until they are rock solid.

Relax Upper body

The tenser you feel during the fight, faster you will be exhausted. Therefore, try to remain calm and relax your upper body. Use your energy wisely and don’t try to knock down the wall with a single punch. Try to bring a wave of kinetic energy to your brain, knowing that a faster fist will quickly hit the target and it will have more knockout power than the slower more powerful strike. By staying relaxed the muscles in your body will respond much faster.

Rotate Body

Always try to use the torque of your body by rotating your body to pump up your fist.  Avoid using your weak upper body muscles to generate speed and power, it will only make your body unbalanced and bring you closer to opponent’s striking range.

Protect Face

When you are striking your opponent, it is equally important that you keep a defensive position which protects your face. In order to achieve that raise your shoulders up to your jaw, thumbs facing down and elbows pointed up. This position will not only protect your face from the front but from the sides as well.

Pull Fists Back to Face

One thing that you must never do is to leave your punches hanging. Doing so will make you exposed from counter strikes. So pull your punches back to your face as soon it lands. This will also give you knockout power and your punches added snap.

Don’t forget to use quality MMA gloves for training to give maximum protection for your hands and your sparring partner.
