How to Clean and Maintain the Horse Mats
Horses spend a large part of the day in the stables; hence, it is important to keep the stables perfect for them. Various diseases and ailments are acquired by the horses in the stables only because they were not in proper shape or are not cleaned on regular basis. The type of drainage in the stable along with the type of mats used in the stables also plays an essential role in keeping the horses healthy. Horse mats are laid on the stable floor to provide comfort to the horses since they have to stand for long hours. The stable mats should be soft, cushions and comfortable therefore the horse can stand on it for long period without any discomfort.
Cleaning and maintaining the horse mats is also a rigorous task, which should be done carefully to enhance the life of the mat. Here are some of the tips for the cleaning and maintaining of the stable mats:
- Spread disinfectant before lying: before laying the mat, it is advisable to spread some powder disinfectant on the floor of the stable. It will get rid of all the germs and disease causing microbes, which may grow beneath the stable mats. The disinfectant should be safe for the horses and in powdered. Liquid disinfectant can cause dampness making the horse feel uncomfortable.
- Keep the floor clean: before laying the mat make sure that the floor is free from any form of bedding straw. It can allow the microbes to grow. The mat should lie flat on the floor.
- Proper drainage: mats can be affected due to wet and moist environment hence you should ensure that the drainage is proper. Clean the mat on time to get rid of the debris or bedding which may affect the flow of the water or urine.
- Buy slip resistant to avoid wear: horse mats can become slippery over a period, which may cause accidents for the horse or the keeper. To avoid wear, buy the slip resistant horse mats. These mats can last longer than any other can.
- Repair on time: Due to nails on the horseshoe, the mats can develop cuts or wear. To avoid further damage repair the cuts and wears on time. You should also check the horse show and mend any lose nail, which is coming out of place.
Follow all these tips to maintain your stable mats for longer period. Use them in proper condition so that your horse can be happy too.
