Doors and windows are an integral part of a home that not only provide ventilation and security, but also create the mood of a room. Vinyl is a popular material that is being used these days for building doors and windows because it can sustain harsh elements better than either wood or metal.

How to care for doors and windows

Doors and windows that are well-maintained not only make your home more comfortable and safe, they also increase the curb appeal of the house. They are available in various materials and each of them has their own charm. As far as maintenance goes, UPVC is by and large the easiest to maintain as it does not allow natural elements to damage it easily. Still, a minimal maintenance regime will make it appear new for a long time after you have purchased them.

Here are some tips that you will find helpful.

Do’s for Windows & Doors Protection

  • When you purchase your windows and doors from the manufacturer, read the guidelines mentioned in the manual so that you know what to do to avoid damaging them. Understanding the locking systems is crucial so that you don’t damage them in ignorance.

  • For your sliding French doors or windows, use a soft nylon brush to clear dirt off the tracks. Use soapy water to rub in the settled dust and wipe away with a clean, damp cloth to clear soap residue.

  • You can use petroleum jelly or something similar to keep the locking parts working well. For the tracks, use an acid and resin free lubricant or grease.

  • For the glass, use an ammonia-free solution. Alternatively, you can use warm soapy water with a soft cloth. After the glass has dried, you can use a blackboard eraser to wipe it clean.

  • You can use a silicon-based lubricant for easing the hinges.

  • Make sure that you also clean the drainage channels along the doors or windows.

Don’ts for Windows & Doors Protection

  • Never paint or varnish your UPVC doors and windows.

  • Using a power washer or high-pressure spray might dislodge the caulking that is holding your windows against water permeation.

  • Strictly stay away from cleaners that have liquid grease, organic solvents, acetone, or chlorine bleach. These substances do irreparable damage to the vinyl surface.

  • Even a slightly abrasive substance will scratch the surface of glass or frame. Stubborn stains don’t have to rubbed with sandpaper; a liquid cleanser and rubbing with a soft cloth can serve the purpose well.

  • Oil-based spray lubricants will attract dirt and grime, so avoid them at all cost.

  • Do not go overboard with applying any kind of cleaner.

Although you can get away with cleaning your UPVC windows and doors just twice a year, homes in coastal areas or areas with frequent dust storms will need more care if they are to perform well year after year. To know more about French windows and doors, you can visit Fenesta.
