Deerfield’s original inhabitants were the Potawatomi Indians. The first White settlers were Horace Lamb and Jacob Cadwell, who settled the area in 1835 with the original name “Cadwell’ Corner.” The area began to grow because of the travel viability of the Des Plaines River and the Chicago River. In 1940, the town was called Leclair but ten years later, John Millen wanted to change the name to Deerfield, first because that was the name of his hometown, but also because there was a lot of deer seen in that area.
