We call love candles and love to buy decorative candles online, but we have never paid much heed to the history of the art of candle making. To start off with, the word candle comes from the Latin word “candera” which simply means “to shine.” Candles were the only source of artificial light until electricity was invented. Candles were made of beeswax and whale oil at that time. In this day and age, candles are available in almost every color, scent, shape and size imaginable. You can get scented candles in India easily in most of the candle stores.

Early Egyptians and Romans used tallow which is a byproduct of animal fat to prepare candles. It was set in a wet container over an open flame until it melted and then was poured over a wick made out of cotton, flax or hemp. Candle making as an art or hobby evolved in the middle ages. Beeswax was limited in availability as it was expensive and therefore, those candles were typically reserved for religious brethren and the wealthy. Soon after, American settlers found out that a sweet smelling wax can be made by boiling berries of the bayberry plant.

The inception of the first candle making machine took place in the 19th century, and now candles are produced in mass quantities. The wicks were upgraded from twisted cotton ones to pleated braid wicks which significantly improved the quality of burning. The first paraffin candle was produced in the UK which was favoured because of its quality of being odor free. Candles although are not the primary source of artificial light now, but they are definitely great for gifting purposes, decorations and religious occasions. There are varied types of candles. Votive candles, jar candles, tea candles, pillar candles and taper candles are some of the examples. They all come in different shapes and sizes and are used for all purposes including religious occasions to creating a romantic ambiance.

Candle Making Supplies and Kits

Many people have already discovered that candle making is a fun and easy hobby. It requires only a few basic tools and pieces of equipment, along with knowledge of the fundamentals of making candles. Because this art involves dealing with extremely hot, melted wax, special precautions must be taken. Wax is heated on a stove top or hot plate, and a double boiler is used to melt the wax. Because hot wax can be messy, another simple solution is placing an old metal coffee can with the wax inside it into a large pot of boiling water. Wicks are another essential piece of equipment, as are candle molds and appropriate containers. Special fragrances can be purchased to make scented candles.
