If someone were to look up an Indian community in Perth, there is quite the chance that you might find more than one. As a matter of fact, if someone were to look up Indian communities in any of the Australian cities, there would be several and this is mainly because of the number of Indians, who are migrating to Australian cities, each year. Many of them arrive on Australian shores looking for better job opportunities, while many arrive because they want to have a better education.

However, once they reach here, they start feeling homesick and want to stay in touch with their home town and everything that is going on in their country. For this, they start looking for Indian newspapers in Brisbane, and in the early days, it was nothing more than foolishness, because there were no Indian newspapers in these Australian cities. Even if someone did manage to bring these newspapers from India, they would be days old, if not weeks!

What came as a turning point was that certain publishing houses understood the craving of Indians who had come to Australian cities. They wanted news from their country, and they wanted it as soon as it happened, or within at least a day. Pouncing on this opportunity, they started publishing Indian newspapers in Brisbane and several other cities in the country. Today, there are several newspapers as well as magazines in the country, which have an Indian origin. What is all the more interesting is the fact that there are also online versions of most of these magazines and newspapers, making them accessible to a greater audience.

Although the trend of catering to the Indian audiences might have started with newspapers and magazines, it eventually started to branch out. These days, you will see several Indian communities in Sydney and other cities of Australia and these have come into existence because there are so many Indians. Most of the times, Indians who have migrated to such foreign shores want to keep in touch with their own culture, ethos, language and even food and music. In addition, when their subsequent generations arrive on the scene, in the form of the children, they want them too to have the same connection to India, that they have had.

If you were to find an Indian community in Perth, you will realise that not only is it big in terms of numbers, but also in terms of celebrations. Communities and associations like these go out of the way to make sure that every festival is celebrated with great style and aplomb. There is almost everything that you would expect at a celebration in India – from music to the colors, the food to the revelry!
