GUIDE TO PRODUCE VERMICOMPOST – BHARATVARSH NATURE FARMS
With the globe becoming more environmentally aware, and everything from agriculture to agriculture and gardening experiencing a significant renaissance, compost reigns supreme.
However, you are not required to work alone. With the aid of some wriggly little buddies, you can create a final product that is highly effective and pocket friendly, as well as healthier and ecologically beneficial for plants!
What is Vermicompost?
Vermicomposting is the process of composting in which particular earthworm species are utilized to improve the organic waste conversion process and provide a better final product. Vermicomposting produces organic fertilizer from decaying food and vegetable waste, bedding materials, and worm castings. Vermicompost benefits include soil enrichment, increased harvest yields, and plant disease suppression.
Why would you want to vermicompost?
Vermicompost is excellent manure for organic agriculture since it is nutrient-dense and includes:
- High-quality humus.
- Plant growth hormones.
- Enzymes.
- Nutrients that help in growth and protect crops from pests and diseases.
Even though organic farming has produced excellent outcomes, people still have the wrong notion that chemical fertilizer leads to increased productivity. According to studies, the plant roots quickly absorb the nutrients from earthworm compost. Vermicompost cannot be flushed from the soil as soon as chemical fertilizers, due to the presence of worm mucus. Most crucial advantage is that plants have more time to absorb and benefit from nutrients present in vermicompost.
Why is vermicompost high in demand?
The worldwide vermicompost market is primarily driven by rising demand for organic products and therefore resulting into rising interest in organic cultivation. Other than the requirement in farming, there is a demand for home gardening, landscaping, golf courses, compost tea production, and selling. The growing demand for vermicompost from private labs, colleges, and high schools for research and teaching is also fueling this market’s global expansion.
Benefits of Vermicompost
Vermicompost will not solve all your garden’s problems, but it will help you increase the productivity and beauty of your garden and at the same time reduce waste! It also improves the quality of soil, which in turn influences your garden’s beauty and the quantity of food it produces. Vermicompost provides several advantages, the most prominent of which are as follows:
1. It results in healthier plants
When compost works on the plants, they get healthier thus decreasing the need for pesticides and insecticides in your garden. The decrease in pesticides allows the region to recover quicker and may initiate a continuous improvement cycle. This cycle is reversed when chemical fertilizers are employed. Chemical fertilizers may boost plant yields, but they have little effect on soil health. The continued use of chemical fertilizers eventually leads to soil degradation. Ammonia and salts accumulate, attacking the plants and making them less resistant to disease.
2. It promotes plant growth.
Chemical fertilizers do not provide natural nourishment for plants. The hormones found in earthworm compost are among the hormones that aid plant growth. Seed germination is promoted and plant development is accelerated resulting in increased agricultural output. The spreading of compost across the soil also encourages healthy root development.
3. It has a capacity for water retention.
According to reports, vermicompost is a colloid that can hold water upto nine times its weight. Because the water is retained at an organic level, it evaporates slowly while being accessible to the plants.
4. It Releases Nutrition Slowly
If you’ve ever used an artificial fertilizer, you’ll know how quickly the nutrients leach and eventually wash away from the soil. If these contaminants make it to the aquifers, they may contaminate your water supply.
5. Reasonably priced
Farmers do not need to go out and purchase those expensive fertilizers when they can create them at home.
Advantages and challenges of Vermicomposting
Increasing knowledge about the dangers of artificial fertilizers and pesticides will likely drive further market expansion for organic goods. Vermicomposting has an advantage compared to traditional composting in both industrial and residential settings, because it allows for the faster treatment of organic wastes. The vermicompost business also has a bright future with prospects in agriculture, home gardening, landscaping, and horticulture.
Despite the multiple benefits of vermicompost, several limitations limit market expansion. The high cost of setting up vermicomposting over traditional compost heaps or batch composters is projected to be the biggest impediment to market expansion. Furthermore, considerations such as the need for more care and therefore higher labour cost involved than conventional composting techniques and the demand for certain temperatures constrain the development of the worldwide vermicompost market.
How does Bharatvash Nature Farm produce vermicompost?
Cow manure, crop residues, agricultural wastes, and vegetable wastes are gathered for vermicomposting. Beds are maintained shallow to reduce heat accumulation and preserve earthworms. The temperature is regulated at around 25 degrees celcius, so earthworms may move material faster.
And for all these activities, we have constructed vermibeds in open-sided sheds. The layers of cow-dung agricultural waste are then spread on these beds, and earthworms are placed between them at a rate of 350 worms (almost 1 kilogram) per cubic meter of bed volume. A temperature of 20-30 degrees Celsius and a moisture content of 40-50 percent are maintained by spraying water over the beds. Vermicompost from Bharatvarsh is completely free from chemicals and attracts existing deep-burrowing earthworms along with ensuring enrichment of the soil with microbes.
Cautions during Vermicompost production
Vermicomposting has its own set of issues. You must ensure that your worm beds do not dry or get too damp. Please don’t add any meat leftovers as the beds will start stinking and attract vermin. You should harvest vermicompost every three weeks or so. Your mileage may vary based on the temperature, humidity, and amount of food you give to your worms.
When to and when not to vermicompost?
When plants are actively developing, applying soil amendments with high nutritional value is best. We wouldn’t ban you from putting it in the garden bed at any time, however, the growth period makes the most sense for plants. Vegetable and ornamental plants may benefit from vermicompost’s outstanding water-holding capabilities in the spring, summer, and autumn. Do not offer vermicompost during severe rains.
You can apply this garden gold to the drip line of any plant to use it as a top dressing. The microscopic roots around the plant’s perimeter absorb a lot of water and nourishment. The drip line should be wrapped in this region of the plant so that water settles on the ground surrounding the plant (or tree).
