A subwoofer is a loudspeaker that produces low-pitched audio frequencies or bass. It is designed to increase the lower frequency range of loudspeakers, usually in the range of 20 Hz. to 125 Hz. Being the most important speaker in a home audio or home theatre system, the subwoofer plays a crucial role in determining the quality of sound produced from the audio system. Without subwoofers, it would not be possible to enjoy the three-dimensional effect in movies and music soundtracks.

Gone are the days when the subwoofer used to be a large box with a large driver that occupied considerable space. Although the larger speakers help reproduce the lower sound frequencies, many people found it difficult to conceal. With the new technology, the woofers come in a reduced size with highly efficient amplifier and dual drivers.

Before buying subwoofers, it is essential to know the types as well as their features to ensure that you get the suitable product and the maximum value for money. Subwoofers may be either active or passive. Active or powered subwoofers have inbuilt power amplifiers that eliminate the need for separate boxes or any external amplifiers.

A passive subwoofer has only a driver and enclosure but no amplifier. An external amplifier drives it. Placing the subwoofer in the right place is important to ensure that you get the right sound quality.

Below are some factors to consider-

•Placing sub near a wall
When you place a subwoofer close to a wall, it will result in an overall amplified bass level. The wall reflects the low-frequency sound waves coming from the rear and sides of the subwoofer, hence it is the most suitable place for positioning a subwoofer.

•Placing it in a corner
You can also perceive considerable increment in bass when you place the subwoofer in the corner. Similar to the above, placing a subwoofer in a corner can also provide a perceivable improvement in bass.

•Using two smaller subwoofers rather than one large
You can consider using two small subwoofers rather than using one large subwoofer that can be suitably placed on the left and right of the audio field. This will not only provide symmetry but also enable you to get rid of any directionality you may experience.

•Hide it under the bed or coffee table
If want to conceal the subwoofer then you can consider hiding it under the couch or coffee table that has plenty of space for its accommodation.

By purchasing a suitable subwoofer for your home theatre system and placing it in the correct position, you can easily optimise the performance of the entertainment system and achieve the most desirable experience.
