Flood situation in Assam, Meghalaya turned critical; CMs review preparedness

Guwahati: With the increasing levels of water in major rivers, Assam and Meghalaya has reported worst flood situation. Amid alerts from the district authorities, over one dozen people including children have reportedly been died. The authorities have urged people not to stay at their homes and go out if there is urgent or medical emergency. As per the report, nearly half dozen people have been died in Assam due to floods while at least 10 people have lost their lives in Meghalaya also.  

As per the report, incessant rain in these two north eastern states deteriorated the situation as water levels in rivers increased to alarming levels. The flood has caused massive loss of property in 28 districts of Assam. According to the reports, Assam’s newly formed Bajali district is more affected than other parts. Nearly 20 lakh people from the state are affected due to the situation. Assam’s two major rivers- Brahmaputra and Gauranga-are reportedly flowing above the danger level in several parts of the state.

It has been reported that Assam’s capital Guwahati has witnessed waterlogging during last couple of days. The city has also reported landslides in Ajantanagar in the Noonmati area in which three persons have been injured. A bridge was also collapsed in Subankhata area of Baksa district.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said to monitor situation in their respective states. Both the CMs review preparedness and rescue works with their state agencies.
