Djokovic seals Shanghai Masters win
Three-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic sealed the Shanghai Masters title after beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Djokovic won his third Grand Slam title of 2015 when he defeated Roger Federer in front of fans enjoying Wimbledon debentures and official Wimbledon hospitality at the All England Tennis Club.
The World No.1 produced a dominant and powerful display as he beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Qi Zhong Stadium. It took the Serb just 78 minutes to dispatch of his opponent 6-2 6-4, to seal his ninth title of the season.
Tsonga entered the game in good form having beat Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, but he was blown away by the world’s best player. Such was the dominance of Djokovic’s performance, he prevented Tsonga from registering an ace in the opening set.
The only blip came when the Frenchman managed to break the World No.1, but at 3-0 Djokovic had brought himself some breathing space and quickly re-established his dominance to take the set 6-2.
In the second set Tsonga remarkably survived five break points, this gutsy resistance was eventually broken when the 30-year-old double faulted with the match poised at 4-4. Djokovic was in an unforgiving mood and quickly served out the match.
After the match Djokovic reflected on his display saying, "Today the key was to get as many serves back into play to Jo because he has one of the biggest serves in the game,"
"He has shown that in the second set, with some break points early in the set. He came up with some aces, some big serves.
"Generally I felt always in control of the match. I felt like I've done everything right. I've won many of my service games very comfortably. I didn't allow him to get into the rhythm, get into the match. Today's match, and overall the tournament, it's gone incredibly well for me."
This was his 25th Masters title and moves him one clear of Roger Federer and just two titles behind all-time record holder Rafael Nadal. Djokovic can also boast the second best winning percentage of all-time at 82%, narrowly behind Nadal on 83%.
The Serb now has 14,285 points in the 2015 Race to London, 6,415 more than second-placed Andy Murray, who he beat in the semi-finals at Shanghai.
