India is a land of diversity and this has led to the development of different beautiful cultures, food preferences, clothing, lifestyle and more. Sarees have been inherent to Indian culture across the country, with different designing and styling unique to every region.

While many love the convenience of western clothing, nothing matches the elegance of a traditional Indian saree. It is perfect attire and displays the true sensibilities of being a woman. Even if you are not a saree person, you must have a few for those special occasions in your life. Here is a list of a few Indian designer sarees that you MUST have in your wardrobe:

1.      Bandhini Saree

Extremely vibrant and colourful, Bandhini sarees are from Gujarat. Made using the tie-and-dye technique, this saree is available in different materials ranging from chiffon, cotton, georgette, silk blends and more.

Tip: These are worn on festive occasions like Navratri. Other than that, you can also wear it for official events.

 


2.      Kanjeevaram Silk Sarees

 


Kanjeevaram Silk Sarees from Tamil Nadu are famous for their broad temple borders, gold accents and rich shades. Made with mulberry silk, these are traditionally hand woven and the method is at least 400 years old. A Kanjeevaram silk saree is a true classic addition to your wardrobe.

Tip: Kanjeevaram Silk Sarees are generally worn during marriages in South India and is now famous in North India as well.

 

3.      Chikankari Saree

 

Introduced by Mughals, Chikankari, meaning “embroidery”, is a very famous embroidery style. Traditionally done on a muslin cloth, Chikankari sarees are mostly hand embroidered and include an open work pattern, like a jaal, with motifs.

Tip: Chikankari saree is an elegant attire and is suitable for formal as well as personal event.

 

4.      Designer Saree

 

A modern touch on traditional techniques and designs, a designer saree is known for contemporary cuts and styles, often worn by celebrities in India and abroad. Using various fluid materials, designers work with fluid cloth materials, bold prints and sequins as well. They often combine traditional styles with modern designs as well.

Tip: Designer sarees are perfect for official as well as personal occasions depending on the work and craft on the saree itself.

 

5.      Kalamkari Saree

 

Kalamkari sarees are ethnic in style and are traditionally done using a ‘kalam’, meaning a ‘pen’. Made by using 23 different techniques like starching, block printing, bleaching, dyeing and more, the result is a beautiful and vibrant saree that is truly Indian. The saree displays various motifs like a peacock, flowers, and more, from the Hindu mythology.

6.      Baluchari Silk Saree

 

Baluchari Silk Saree originated in West Bengal and is known for the soft silk weaves. Depicting characters from Mahabharata and Ramayana on the pallu, this one is another truly traditional Indian saree which caught the eye of the royal household in Bengal.

Tip: The rich colours and designs are amazing and is perfect for festival occasions.
