Difference between Pulse rate and Heart rate and how to examine them?
Pulse rate and heart rate are two important indicators of cardiovascular health. While they are often used interchangeably, they are actually two distinct measures.
Pulse rate is the number of times that a person's pulse is felt to beat in a minute. This can be felt by pressing a finger against the wrist, neck, or chest to feel the blood flow. Heart rate, on the other hand, is the number of times that the heart beats in a minute. It can be measured using a device called an electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG).
The main difference between pulse rate and heart rate is the way in which they are measured. Pulse rate is measured by feeling the blood flow, while heart rate is measured by using an electronic device.
There are several factors that can affect pulse rate and heart rate. For example, exercise, stress, and certain medications can all affect these rates. A person's age and overall health can also play a role.
Leading cardiac surgeon Dr Ramji Mehrotra says that it is important to keep track of both pulse rate and heart rate, as abnormal readings may indicate a potential health issue. For example, a very low heart rate (less than 60 beats per minute) is known as bradycardia, and a very high heart rate (more than 100 beats per minute) is known as tachycardia. Both of these conditions can be serious and may require medical attention.
To examine pulse rate, place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the inside of the wrist, just below the base of the thumb. You should feel a slight tapping sensation as the blood flows through the arteries. Count the number of taps that you feel in a minute. This is your pulse rate.
To examine heart rate, an EKG machine is required. These are often found in hospitals and clinics, but there are also portable versions available for home use. The machine consists of sensors that are placed on the chest, arms, and legs. These sensors pick up the electrical signals produced by the heart and display them on a monitor. The number of heartbeats per minute is then calculated based on these signals.
It is important to note that pulse rate and heart rate are not always the same. For example, if a person has an irregular heartbeat, their heart rate may be different from their pulse rate. This is because the pulse rate is determined by the flow of blood, while the heart rate is determined by the electrical activity of the heart.
Dr Ramji Mehrotra opinion is that pulse rate and heart rate are both important indicators of cardiovascular health. They are measured in different ways and can be affected by various factors. It is important to keep track of both pulse rate and heart rate and to seek medical attention if either is abnormal. By understanding the difference between pulse rate and heart rate, and knowing how to examine them, you can take an active role in monitoring your cardiovascular health.
