For as long as I remember, getting curtains that were more than just decoration pieces hanged on the walls, covering the windows, was an absolute chore. Not only did I have to walk for miles, accompanying my mother while she sifted through dozens of stores, looking through different curtain fabrics to find one that was thick enough to block the light, while also visually pleasing. Trust me when I say this, I have developed a very profound disliking for curtains, that is, until now. No longer do I need to worry about random lights waking me up at night, and the best part is, I get to save money on it too, both in the long run and in the initial investment.

What sort of curtains are they?

They are energy efficient curtains that not only keep the light out, they also keep out the cold during the winters and keep in the cold during the summers. These curtains are miracle workers, especially during the extreme seasons where they make your house a true refuge and safe haven from the ruthless elements. Also, if you are a light sleeper, this is the best solution to your problem. No more disturbed sleep because of the light seeping in through the curtains.

How do they do it?

Getting down to business, the technicalities are what makes them so accessible to everyone. They don’t have to be bought at IKEA to be perfectly good at what they’re supposed to do, you can make them yourself as well. Here’s how they work.

·         The way you fix them up is key. Make sure that your curtains lie as close to the windows as possible, and if you can, ensure that you have floor length curtains that literally touch the floor. This helps a great deal in saving heat/cold.

·         Do not leave any gaps. This is another essential aspect of ensuring that your curtains are good at their job. Close them perfectly, so that their aren’t any inlets or outlets.

·         Be smart when it comes to color. The difference between a light and dark color is that the former reflects heat and light, while the latter absorbs them. So make sure that the side of your curtains facing the outside is either white in color, or has some sort of reflective surface like plastic.

What do they do?

Well, you must have figured out what they do differently till now. The multi-purpose curtains keep in the warmth or the cold and also help keep the light out, completely. They aren’t just doing one job correctly, they’re doing both. That itself makes them a winner for me.

More than that, they help you save money. Considering that they insulate your house around 30% better, they help you save on heating and cooling costs, which means that you won’t have to use your heaters and air conditioners as much, helping you save on gas and electricity bills. The plus side to them is, you don’t even need to buy them, even though you can buy them cheap if you want to through home depot coupons. But if you don’t have access to those, you can find lots of tips on the internet that guide you on how to make your own.
