Ear reconstruction surgery is considered as one of the most challenging and difficult plastic surgery procedures. This is a rare surgery as the majority of plastic surgeons just experience 1-2 cases per year. This is an advanced plastic surgical procedure that provides excellent results in correcting various types of external ear defects (microtia) and delivers the best results if performed by an expert.  Dr. Parag Telang is one of the best plastic surgeons who performs ear reconstruction surgery in India. He delivers excellent results due to advancements in the procedure and his determination to help children combating ear deformities.

Ear deformity/deformities or malformation/s can be by birth (birth defects) or due to any injury. Creating a normal ear with the help of tissue obtained from the patient’s own body like skin, fascia, or cartilage helps in correcting certain situations. Ear reconstruction surgery is quite complicated as it is related to creating a complex shape of the ear and give a natural look to the ear. Ear reconstruction surgery is performed in two stages, which are performed about 6-12 months apart. This type of ear surgery is preferred by two main groups of patients namely, those who have an underdeveloped ear/s at birth (microtia ear) and those who have lost a normal ear due to disease or accident.

This surgery is performed in two stages:

  •  Stage 1:

The first stage of ear reconstruction surgery involves creating a skin pocket at the site of the ear, which also involves reshaping the available tissue and thinning the skin to impersonate the ear skin. The cartilage of the rib is cut into three pieces. In this stage, the rib cartilage is carved and is then wired together with the help of fine stainless steel wire, which helps in constructing detailed ear structure. This structure is then inserted into the pocket, and gentle suction is applied to enable the skin and ear structure to come together. The first stage takes about 4-6 hours, and the patient has to stay in the hospital for about 5-7 days.

  •  Stage 2:

In the second stage, the new ear is put into position, and it sticks out from the head like a normal ear. To provide support, the position of the ear is lifted with the help of a cartilage piece. The flap of tissue and skin graft is then taken to cover the exposed cartilage and to finish the process of ear reconstruction surgery.

The second stage of ear reconstruction surgery takes about 3- 4 hours and is performed after 6-12 months of stage one. The patient has to stay in the hospital for about 2-3 days.

Ear reconstruction surgery has a high success rate, with over 90% of patients attained the normal ear shape. This surgery has a high success rate and best results.
