prolific artist born in 1937 in Breckenridge, Minnesota. He attended Wisconsin
State University, Sacramento State University and received his Master of Fine
Arts degree from the University of Arizona. He then moved to Santa Fe, New
Mexico where he taught painting and history at the Institute of Native American
Arts for five years. He traveled extensively and lectured at many universities
and art conferences including Princeton and Dartmouth College. In 1972 he was
invited by the Smithsonian Institution to participate in a two-person show with
T.C. Cannon. His awards are numerous and his reputation as an artist continues
to expand.

pricing over the last five to seven years. The most desirable of his works are
paintings from the 1970’s. Important collectors have purchased his works and
there have been museum shows exhibiting his work. It is anticipated that his
works will continue to increase in value over time. Fritz Scholder created
paintings, works on paper, limited edition prints, sculptures and books.
If you are interested in consigning for sale works by
Fritz Scholder you have several choices.
You can consign it to an auction house to be offered at auction. You can
also consign it to a gallery that specializes in the work of Fritz Scholder for
private sale. The value of a Fritz Scholder work of art will vary dependent
upon the type of artwork and the year in which it was created. Fritz Scholder
paintings from the 1970’s are the most desirable and the most valuable. Research
the auction house or gallery to be sure they have a good reputation and that
they specialize in the works of Fritz Scholder. Review their past sales results
for similar works you are considering consigning and review their consignment
terms and conditions.
There are several reputable auction houses other than the
large auction houses. These auction houses provide a more personal experience
and often have lower fees than the large auction houses. If you are considering
consigning works to a gallery, research galleries that specialize in the
secondary market as opposed to galleries that represent artists. You will want
to execute a consignment agreement so that there is documentation associated
with the artwork.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to consigning
your Fritz Scholder artwork to an auction house versus an art gallery. The advantages of consigning artwork to a
gallery for private sale is that they will typically consign all works by Fritz
Scholder no matter the type of artwork or the year it was created. Other
advantages are that it is a private transaction and you will typically realize
more value from a gallery than an auction house. Disadvantages include that
there is no timeline associated with the sale of the artwork. It may sell
immediately or may take up to a year to sell. The advantages of consigning
artwork to an auction house are that they typically sell eighty to one hundred
percent of the lots offered at any given auction. Disadvantages include the
fact that it is a public sale and the prices realized are typically less than
if you consigned the work to a gallery for private sale. If the work does not
sell than it is a matter of public record at what price the work of art did not
sell. Auction houses also may not be interested in all works by Fritz Scholder.
If you do your due diligence in researching an auction
house or an art gallery to consign works by Fritz Scholder, you will find an
adequate option that best fits your needs and goals.
